The Primary Grade Curriculum
English Literacy
Our English program begins early with Jolly Phonics, laying a strong foundation in reading and pronunciation. We use high-quality donated resources like National Geographic World textbooks to support vocabulary and content learning. Students study all subjects exclusively in English, helping them build fluency and confidence through daily use. We emphasize communication with interactive activities such as classroom TED Talks, where students practice public speaking and critical thinking. By Grades 3 and 4, students are learning directly with a native English-speaking teacher, accelerating their progress and preparing them for global opportunities.
Learning Resources & Technology
At Sala Monkey, we make the most of what we have. Due to limited funding, we aren’t able to purchase new textbooks, so students often share high-quality secondhand books with their teacher. Lessons are supported with printed worksheets, visual aids, and a shared wall projector to bring learning to life. Our classrooms share three older-generation iPads and a few outdated computers, many of which are in need of repair. Despite these limitations, we are committed to integrating technology wherever possible—especially for AI and computer learning. We would deeply benefit from additional tech resources to expand access and give our students the tools they need to thrive in a digital world.
Mathematics
Our students learn using the Singapore Mathematics approach, which emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. This method is especially helpful for rural children because it builds a strong foundation in numeracy through visual models and step-by-step reasoning, rather than rote memorization. It empowers students to think logically, apply math to real-life situations, and develop confidence in their learning—skills that are essential not only for academic success but for their future opportunities beyond the classroom.
Science/STEAM
Teacher Pin is our dedicated G1/G2 teacher and also a life science teacher at the local public high school. At Sala Monkey, he leads our STEAM program with a strong focus on project-based learning (PBL). His lessons help students make meaningful connections between hands-on activities and the science content they study in their Khmer public school textbooks. Through engaging projects and real-world applications, Teacher Pin brings science to life and deepens our students’ understanding across multiple subjects.
Khmer Traditional Dance
Our Khmer Apsara dance training program offers a culturally rich experience that connects Khmer children with their heritage. Learning this traditional dance form not only preserves an integral aspect of Khmer culture but also instills a sense of pride and identity in the younger generation. Through Apsara dance, children develop grace, discipline, and an appreciation for their cultural roots. This training serves as a vital bridge between past traditions and future generations, fostering a deeper understanding and respect for Khmer cultural heritage.
Classical Ballet
Sala Monkey Language and Arts School proudly stands as the first educational institution outside of Phnom Penh to introduce a ballet program in the rural provinces. This groundbreaking initiative was made possible by our first volunteer ballet teacher, Teacher Epononiné from France. The establishment of this program has presented an incredible opportunity for our girls, offering numerous benefits such as improved physical fitness, enhanced posture and coordination, increased self-discipline, and a boost in self-confidence. Moreover, learning ballet fosters creativity, expression, and appreciation for the arts. At Sala Monkey, we believe in the transformative power of arts education, and we are dedicated to providing enriching experiences for our students. We are always in need of volunteer ballet teachers who are passionate about sharing their expertise and making a positive impact in the lives of young dancers. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer!
