Our Sovannaphumi Scholarship Program

Why should I support a scholarship?

The Sovannaphumi Scholarship Program was created to give rural students access to a more balanced, high-quality education while reducing financial pressure on families and protecting time for meaningful learning.

Students in the scholarship program continue their native Khmer language studies through the Cambodian public school system, while also enrolling at Sovannaphumi School for structured Khmer academic support in a more consistent, supportive and academic driven environment.

Alongside this, they are able to continue participation in the Sala Monkey Language and Arts School English program, as well as enrichment classes including arts, music, and creative learning if their class schedule remains free. If not, we suppport their English education at Sovannpuhmi School.

.In many cases, students in rural areas are required to attend mandatory paid tutoring sessions at their public schools, regardless of family income. These additional classes often extend the school day by one to two hours and can directly conflict with other learning opportunities. For many families, the cost and time burden creates significant stress and limits a child’s ability to fully benefit from additional educational programs.

There is also a major transition point after Grade 6. Once students complete primary school and enter secondary public school, they are required to attend full-time, which often means they must discontinue their afternoon learning with us. The scholarship program helps address this gap by allowing students to continue advancing in their English studies and creative learning for as long as possible, extending their educational development beyond what would otherwise be possible.

The scholarship program was designed to remove these barriers by providing an alternative pathway where students can continue their Khmer studies in a structured academic setting while also accessing English and arts education without conflicting schedules or added financial pressure.

Today, 14 students are enrolled in the program, and the impact has been significant—greater consistency in learning, improved English proficiency, stronger academic performance, and increased confidence. The program continues to focus on creating opportunity, stability, and long-term educational growth for rural students.
